This is a tragic story but with a positive outcome as it has brought about Sabrina's Law.

As a former teacher I shared the concern of the parents for the safety of their children - not just those with food allergies but also other conditions that could be life threatening.

It was absolutely shocking to me how many parents do not inform the classroom teachers of these conditions .. in part because they assume that the school officials notify the teachers but this is not always the case because of The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.

Life threatening conditions are shared with staff along with crisis procedures but there are some things that aren't shared. For an example, not all children with epilepsy are identified even to the school. It is really frightening to have a child go into seizures without any idea that this could happen. In some cases, knowing what triggers a seizure could have prevented it.

Another thing that really irked me were the number of children who are not given medic alert bracelets or pendants to wear. I have heard every excuse for not doing this and my answer has always been, who speaks for your child if you aren't there and they can't speak for themselves?

I am very happy that Ally has put medic alert bracelets on all of her children as well as educating them and their teachers about their food allergies.

Ally has been active in introducing her school council to the No Child Without program. Medic Alert Canada is partnering with schools/school boards to ensure school-aged children has access to medic alert bracelets as they can be expensive if you have a limited income or several children in the family that require them.
